What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
All guidesUpdated 6 steps
TL;DR
SEO works on ranking your pages in search results so people click them. AEO, answer engine optimization, works on being the source an AI assistant uses or names when it answers. They share most of the groundwork: crawlable pages, clear answers and a sound site. They differ in which crawlers you let in, how pages are shaped and how you measure results.
AEO is a newer name, and it is sometimes sold as a replacement for SEO. It is not one. Assistants that search the web retrieve pages much as a search engine does, so a site that is hard to crawl or index is hard to quote too.
Google says there are no extra technical requirements for appearing in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Other assistants publish less. The honest position: do the SEO basics, then add the few things that matter only for answers.
Step by step
- Step 1
Fix the SEO foundation first
Make sure your pages return a 200 status, are indexable, have unique titles and descriptions, and are linked from somewhere on your site. A broken or orphaned page cannot rank, and it cannot be retrieved for an answer either.
- Step 2
Open the door to AI crawlers
SEO needs search crawlers such as Googlebot and Bingbot. AEO also needs answer bots such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your firewall. Check this before any other AEO work, because nothing else matters if they cannot get in.
- Step 3
Shape pages to be quoted, not just clicked
A search result needs a good title to earn the click. An answer needs a quotable passage. Put a direct answer of 40 to 70 words right under the H1, phrase headings as questions, and write sentences that still make sense when lifted out alone.
- Step 4
Treat your name as data
Search engines rank pages, and assistants also have to work out who you are and what you do. Use one product name and one description in your titles, structured data and external profiles, so the evidence about you adds up instead of splitting.
- Step 5
Measure each with its own instrument
For SEO, Search Console reports clicks, impressions and average position from Google. For AEO there is no equivalent console, so you track a fixed set of buyer questions and record whether your domain shows up. Keep the two reports separate, because their numbers mean different things.
- Step 6
Run one loop for both
On a regular cycle, fix what broke, improve pages that almost rank, and add a new page only when the data shows a question you do not answer. RankingTop runs this loop as a hosted service; paid plans add Search Console data and ten locked AI prompts.
Questions people ask next
Is AEO the same as GEO?
In practice, mostly. Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization are both names for working on visibility in AI-generated answers. People draw the line between them differently, and no standard definition settles it.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Assistants that search the web depend on pages that can be crawled and retrieved, which is what SEO maintains. If organic search still sends you buyers, cutting it to fund AEO trades a measured channel for a harder one to measure.
Can I measure AEO in Google Search Console?
Only partly. Google's documentation has described AI Overviews and AI Mode appearances as counted within the regular web search totals, not reported on their own. Other assistants are not in Search Console at all, so you need a separate prompt-based check.
