Does FAQ schema help with AI search?
All guidesUpdated 6 steps
TL;DR
Not as a ranking or citation lever, as far as anyone can show. FAQPage markup labels which text on your page is a question and which is its answer, in a standard format machines can parse. Since 2023 Google has shown FAQ rich results mainly for authoritative government and health sites. Add the markup only for questions and answers visible on the page.
FAQ schema is structured data, usually JSON-LD, that wraps question-and-answer pairs in the schema.org FAQPage, Question and Answer types. For a few years it earned expandable FAQ snippets in Google results, and many sites added it for that reason.
In 2023 Google cut those rich results back to mainly authoritative government and health websites. No AI engine has published that FAQ markup affects whether it cites a page. What remains is the plain value: the markup removes any doubt about where each question and answer begins and ends.
Step by step
- Step 1
Start with visible questions and answers
Write the FAQs on the page first, in plain HTML every reader can see. Use the questions people actually ask next, each answered in two to four sentences. Marking up content that is not visible goes against Google's structured data guidelines.
- Step 2
Generate the JSON-LD
Build one FAQPage object whose mainEntity lists each Question, with the question as its name and an acceptedAnswer of type Answer holding the answer text. Copy the wording from the page exactly. RankingTop's free FAQ schema generator builds this block and escapes it so it cannot break your page's HTML.
- Step 3
Add it to the page once
Place the script tag in the page's HTML, in the head or the body. If your CMS or SEO plugin already outputs FAQ markup, extend that block instead of adding a second one. One page should carry one FAQPage block.
- Step 4
Validate the markup
Run the page through the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org to check the structure. Google's Rich Results Test checks it too, but do not read a missing FAQ rich result as an error, because most sites are no longer eligible for one.
- Step 5
Keep markup and page in sync
When you edit an answer on the page, edit the markup in the same change. Generating both from one source, such as a list in your code or CMS, stops them from drifting apart.
- Step 6
Spend the rest of the effort on the answers
The markup only labels what is already there. If an answer is vague, outdated or buried, labelling it fixes nothing. Rewrite the answer first, then mark it up.
Questions people ask next
Will FAQ schema get me FAQ rich results in Google?
Probably not. Since 2023 Google shows them mainly for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. If your site is not one of those, treat the markup as labelling, not as a way to win extra space in results.
Do ChatGPT or Perplexity read schema markup?
Their operators have not published how, or whether, structured data affects their answers. Their crawlers fetch your HTML, and JSON-LD is part of that HTML, but that does not show it changes anything. Add it because it is accurate and cheap, not because of a promised effect.
Is FAQ schema risky?
Only when it does not match the page. Marking up questions that are not visible, or answers that differ from the text readers see, goes against Google's structured data guidelines and can lead to a manual action. Accurate markup of visible questions and answers is low risk.
